UK subscription rules due to apply from 1 January 2027, subject to Parliament

Send the subscription notices the new UK rules are due to require, without building anything.

From 1 January 2027 (if Parliament approves the regulations), UK businesses selling subscriptions to consumers will have to send reminders before certain renewals, cooling-off notices and cancellation confirmations, and make cancelling easy. If you bill through Stripe, FairRenew works out which notices are due, sends them in your business name, and keeps a record of each one.

Not sure the rules apply to you? Check in seven questions (free, nothing stored).

Sign up before 1 January 2027 and it is free until 14 January 2027, so you see the first two weeks of the rules in action. After that, 14 days free. No card needed to start.

FairRenew sends notices. It does not give legal advice. The detailed rules are still in draft and waiting for Parliament's approval. Read what that means.

Who it is for

Small UK businesses

Clubs, memberships, apps, courses and subscription boxes: anything people pay for again and again.

Selling to consumers

The rules protect individual customers. Business-to-business subscriptions are not covered, and some sectors are excluded (see the list).

Billing through Stripe

We read your subscriptions from Stripe. You do not need to change how you take payment.

How it works

  1. Connect Stripe

Create a restricted, read-only key in Stripe and paste it in. We show you exactly which boxes to tick. Or explore with sample data first.

  2. Check the preview

See every notice we would send in the next 30 days, to whom, why, and its full wording, before anything goes out.

  3. Switch on sending

We email your customers on time, in your business name, and keep a log of each notice that shows if an entry is later changed. Download your own copy at any time.

What we send for you

NoticeWhen
Copy of full termsSent shortly after a new subscription starts: a copy of your full terms (pasted text) and the cooling-off information, by email, which counts as a durable medium.
Reminder noticeBefore a renewal payment: before the first payment after a free trial or introductory price, then before the last payment in each 6-month period (about twice a year on a monthly plan), and before every renewal for plans billed less often than every 6 months.
Early annual reminderAn extra, earlier reminder before each annual (12-month or longer) renewal, so annual customers get two.
Cooling-off noticeSent on the day of a "relevant renewal" (the first payment after a free trial or introductory price ends, or an annual renewal), on its own, explaining the right to cancel until the end of the 14th day after the renewal.
End-of-contract confirmationConfirms a cancellation and the date the subscription ends. Sent straight away for cancellations on your cancel page; for cancellations made in Stripe (such as the Stripe customer portal) when our next check sees them, usually within an hour or two; and when you record a cancellation you received by email or phone.

Plus a simple online cancel page for your customers (no hoops, no pressure), and suggested wording for your sign-up page.

Questions

Is this legal advice?

No. FairRenew is a tool that sends notices based on rules you can see and change. We have built it carefully from the published Act and the draft regulations, but we cannot tell you what your business must do. If you are unsure, ask a qualified adviser.

Are the rules final?

Not yet. The Act is law, but its subscription chapter is not in force, and the detailed regulations and guidance are drafts until Parliament approves them. The government intends them to apply from 1 January 2027. We will update our notices if the final rules change. More about the rules.

Which subscriptions are covered?

By default, contracts that start on or after 1 January 2027. You can choose to send reminders to existing customers too, which the draft guidance calls best practice.

Which cancellations get a confirmation?

Cancellations on your FairRenew cancel page get one straight away. Cancellations made in Stripe (for example in the Stripe customer portal) get one when our next check sees them, usually within an hour or two. Cancellations by email or phone get one when you record them in your dashboard. Subscriptions Stripe ends after failed payments do not get a "you cancelled" email.

Do you take refunds or payments from my customers?

No. We never move money. If a customer cancels during a cooling-off period, we tell you what refund is owed and by when, and you make the refund in Stripe.

What can you see in my Stripe account?

Only what the restricted key allows: customers, subscriptions, invoices, products, prices and coupons, read-only. Write access to subscriptions is optional and only used to cancel when a customer asks on your cancel page.

What do my customers see?

Plain emails from "Your Business via FairRenew", with replies going to your own support address. Nothing you type is turned into a link, apart from your cancel page and your terms page on your own website.

Can I prove I sent a notice?

Every notice is logged with the time, recipient, a fingerprint of the exact content and the delivery status. Each entry includes a fingerprint of the one before, so a later change or deletion shows up when the log is checked. The log is held by FairRenew, so download your own copy regularly: your copy lets anyone check later that nothing has changed since. We keep the log for as long as you are a customer.
